the guarded gates of Fremont Place, a Hancock Park enclave
right off Wilshire Boulevard and not more that a mile from
Nat Cole's former residence. Even though the development's
perimeter was protected by a rent-a-cop in a gatehouse,
thorny bougainvillea-covered walls, and filigreed wrought
iron work, they couldn't hold back the tide of integration.

black, Latino, and Asian bankers, lawyers, and corporate
chiefs.
