Excerpt from STORMY WEATHER
Fremont Place
I doubted if their last stand would have been inside the guarded gates of Fremont Place, a Hancock Park enclave right off Wilshire Boulevard and not more that a mile from Nat Cole's former residence. Even though the development's perimeter was protected by a rent-a-cop in a gatehouse, thorny bougainvillea-covered walls, and filigreed wrought iron work, they couldn't hold back the tide of integration. Lou Rawls and Muhammad Ali had crashed those gates, as did black, Latino, and Asian bankers, lawyers, and corporate chiefs.
